Mal Smith


  • A professional aquaculturist with over 20 years experience in the industry.

  • Began aquaculture career at Seahatcheries Pty Ltd, where he helped develop technology for consistent spawning and larval production of barramundi.

  • In 1992, he joined Seafarm Pty Ltd., where he spearheaded the world’s largest domestication program for Penaeus merguiensis. He was also instrumental in initiating domestication of P. monodon and has been a key figure in the Australian Domestication Program for the species.

  • At the present time, Mal Smith is the Director of Breeding and Hatchery Operations and is located in IAI’s Technology Service project with the Department of Fisheries, Brunei Darussalam. He oversees selective breeding and hatchery production of specific pathogen free P. monodon and P. stylirostris and is responsible for managing quarantine, nucleus breeding, broodstock production, and hatchery facilities to produce large, fast growing P. monodon.
